Pete Best "The Fifth Beatle"

2011-12-24 14:24:32

Pete Best Did your friends ever go to a party and forgot to call you to go with them? Did they ever go on a road trip and for some reason you could not join them? Did someone ever "betray" you in some other way? If not you have some really good friends. If something like that did happened to you, maybe you will know how Pete Best felt when his friends replaced him with Ringo Starr right at the time when they started to record their first hit songs.

Pete Best was born on 24 Noveber 1941 in Madaras, India. He moved to Liverpool in 1945. His mother started The Casbah Coffee Club in the cellar of her house. It had over a thousand members and was where The Beatles (then know as The Quarrymen) played some of their first concerts. Pete joined The Beatles on 12 August 1960, only one day before they were to go to Hamburg. In the following years they did two more tours in Hamburg, Brian Epstein became their manager and their popularity was growing fast. But just when they started recording their first songs with EMI other members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison decided to fire Pete Best and replace him with Ringo Starr. He was informed about their decision through their manager Brian Epstein on 16 August 1962, the reason for replacing him is untill this day unknown. He later worked as civil servant for 20 years, before starting The Pete Best Band. phonetic drum solo

Of course i can't judge if the decision to replace Pete Best with Ringo was good or bad. We will never know if The Beatles could be as good as they were without Ringo. All i know is The Beatles could hardly be any better and that Pete Best deserves at least some fame for the part he played for them.

One of the few recorded Beatles' songs with Pete Best on drums:
